Raids net 400,000 speed pills
Law enforcement officers on Wednesday launched a series of early morning raids in Chiang Rai, Phayao and Phrae provinces, nabbing 172 drug suspects and seizing more than 400,000 methamphetamine pills.
More than 1,400 police, army and administrative officers participated in the operations, presided over by Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak Theerasawat, which targeted 160 locations in the three northern provinces.
The raids were aimed mainly at gang members led by suspected drug ring leaders Suthiwas Sae-teun and Koijeaw Ngen-on, both of whom were arrested in Phetchabun in March 2014 with three million methamphetamine tablets in their possession. Upwards of 10 firearms, pickup trucks and motorcycles were confiscated.
Of the 100 million baht worth of assets seized yesterday, most belong to members of the Sae-teun family, an ethnic Hmong clan allegedly running a major drug network, according to police.
In Chiang Rai, officers also stormed the house of Ampai Ngam-nonthong, the 34-year-old wife of a Chinese businessman running a cross-border trade company, but found nothing suspicious.
The Chinese man was suspected of being involved in drug networks, officers said.
Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak said the raids, code-named "Dawn Operations by the Mekong River" were undertaken to prevent and suppress drug traffickers who smuggle illicit substances into Thailand via the northern border.
Smugglers hide drugs first in neighbouring countries then bring them to Thailand through Chiang Rai and Phayao, Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak said.
Once inside the country, Hmong networks ferry the narcotics along routes in Phrae and other northeastern provinces.
Evidence collected in yesterday's operations will be shared with the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo), which will map and track the money trails left behind by drug networks, he added.
Meanwhile, drug suppression authorities in Thailand, Myanmar, China and Laos have agreed to work together to thwart drug smuggling along the Mekong River.
Relevant authorities will share information on trafficking and patrol the river, particularly 11 jetties reportedly used for illegal activities, according to Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak.
They will also meet to form strategies to target drug smuggling into Thailand from the border towns of Pong in Myanmar and Muang Mom in Laos.
Both riverside locations are opposite Chiang Saen district of Chiang Rai, where drug smuggling is reportedly rife, Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak added.

The Narcotics Suppression Bureau seized 30 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine worth 105 million baht and arrested two people during an undercover drug operation in Bangkok.
Natcha Srilawong, 46, and Manop Wangkit, 41, were apprehended after police got a tip two people would be bringing drugs to sell in Bangkok, said deputy police chief Pongsapat Pongcharoen.
Police set up a drug buy and said Mr Manop brought six kilogrammes of ya ice to undercover officers in the Rangnam area. Police expanded the investigation and searched a room on Soi Ratchaparop 18 where they found another 24kg of crystal meth.
Police said Mr Manop told them that he received 50,000 baht from this job but Ms Natcha refused to provide any information. Police investigators alleged she is the person who looks after finances for the drug gang whose boss resides in a neighbouring country.

BANGKOK, 19 February 2015 (NNT) – Thousands of drug suspects have been arrested and 9.4 million amphetamine tablets and other substances have been confiscated during the 1 month period of the Safe Mekong Operations, says the ONCB Secretary-General.
The Secretary-General of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) Permpong Chaovalit has disclosed the operational report during the first month of the Safe Mekong Operations from 12 January to 18 February 2015.
The report states that 1,289 suspects have been arrested in 1,117 narcotics related cases. Confiscated drugs include 9.4 million amphetamine tablets, 440 kilograms of amphetamine crystal, 180 kilograms of heroin, 59 kilograms of opium, 20,000 kilograms of methylene chloride, 8,150 kilograms of caffeine, and 293 kilograms of Pseudoephedrine.
The ONCB Secretary-General has said that he will propose to the Minister of Justice for an extension of the Safe Mekong Operations. Operations would be extended until the end of this year due to the operational success of the campaign.
The Safe Mekong Operations combine suppression and the crackdown of narcotics smugglers along the Mekong River through the cooperation of China, Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand.
Operations under this campaign include joint patrols, area searches, checkpoints, port searches, and random inspections of chemical exporters in the area.

Seven arrested in two drug cases
Police have arrested seven suspects in two drug cases and seized 600,000 amphetamine pills in total.
A press conference on the two cases was held at the Narcotics Suppression Bureau in Bangkok on Saturday.
In the first case, Thanat Pamornsucharitkul, 25, Vivatchai Santipopphum, 29, both from Chiang Mai, and Paibul Yipa, 36, from Mae Hong Son, were caught in the North earlier this week.
Narcotics suppression police pretended to be a buyer, asking to purchase 200,000 yaba pills from the gang on Monday. When the product was delivered at Central Airport Department Store's parking lot in Chiang Mai two days later, officers arrested Mr Thanat but the other two suspects escaped. Mr Vivatchai was later caught in Mae Hong Son and Mr Mr Paibul was taken into custody in Kamphaeng Phet.
In the other case, police arrested Penprapa Kampol, 30, Ek-amarin Kampol, 23, Payont Vaiphetchari, 34, and Somyot Noppasri, with 400,000 pills stashed in a spare car tyre.
The officers acted on a tip-off that the gang had brought the pills to Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in district.
The suspects confessed, saying the yaba was to be distributed in the central region.
All four suspects were charged with having in possession drugs for illegal sale and distribution.
Police are also trying to expand the probe into their networks.

2.9m meth pills found in cold truck
Nearly 3 million methamphetamine pills were recovered from a refrigerated truck loaded with vegetables found abandoned in front of a fuel pump in Pathum Thani's Khlong Luang district on Tuesday night, police said.
Pol Lt Chumpol Song-ngam, a duty officer at Khlong Luang police station, said police and provincial officials led by governor Pongsathorn Sajjacholaphan went to the petrol station in tambon Khlong Nueng at 8pm after being informed by the driver of a transport company about a strong smell coming from the cold-storage truck.
The officials opened the back door, which was not locked, of the Nakhon Pathom-registered truck, which belonged to Tui Guarantee Co, and found baskets of vegetables inside.
They found 20 sacks hidden underneath the vegetables. The sacks contained a total 2.96 million ya ba tablets.
Pol Maj Gen Montree Yaemyim, the provincial police chief, said he learned from workers at the petrol station that the truck had been left there since early Tuesday. Sensing something unusual, Charan Ruangdet, a truck driver from Mon Transport Co, informed the police.
Nobody was arrested after the recovery. Police were investigating to find the origin of the drugs.

NAKHON PHANOM – More than 610,000 methamphetamine pills were found in a pickup truck after two men abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot in Tha Uthen district.
Veera Reukvanichkul, Tha Uthen district chief, said Friday that a police officer spotted a truck in tambon Chaiburi with two men loading suspicious cargo, so he had identified himself and asked to search the vehicle.
The men hurried to get into the car and sped away, so the police officer asked for assistance to look for the vehicle.
Other officers found the pickup and chased it to an intersection in Tha Uthen town. The two men exited the truck and escaped on foot. Police could not find them.
A search of the truck found 76 packs of ya ba tablets stashed under the cab.
Mr Veera said the 610,000 pills are sold at 50-70 baht each across the Lao border, but the price went up to 200 baht each in provinces of the Thai side. However, the prices can go up to 300 baht each in other regions.
The police will continue the investigation to track down the truck owner and the drug gang.

Schon verrückt... nur schon wenn man die letzten paar Meldungen seit Mitte Februar liest, kommt man bereits auf ungefähr 15 Millionen Pillen welche gefunden wurden. Man kann sich somit vorstellen, wieviele da von der Polizei unentdeckt unter die Menschen gebracht werden...
