Police nab gunman for abbot's murder
Suspect claims he was hired by fugitive cop

Police have arrested a man who they say confessed to murdering the abbot of a Buddhist temple in Udon Thani on March 1.

Panja Chareesaen, 49, from Kalasin, the suspected gunman in the murder of Phra Bandit Supanthito, 48, the abbot of Wat Pa Tor Si Siad, was brought to a press conference in Udon Thani yesterday.

Police said Mr Panja did not have a criminal record and had admitted to being hired by Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai Sroisangwal, also 49, to kill Phra Bandit.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai, who is now on the run, is a member of Udon Thani police's crime suppression and prevention unit.

Mr Panja told police he was hired for 50,000 baht to kill the monk.

At first he did not realise Phra Bandit was a monk, Mr Panja told police.

He said he used a shotgun modified to take M16 bullets to kill the abbot.

Deputy police chief Jakthip Chaijinda, however, said he was confident Mr Panja was aware the person he had been hired to kill was a monk, otherwise he would not have shot the abbot straight away.

"If he did not know the victim was a monk, Panja would have hesitated before he shot him. But the gunman shot the victim right away. He came to the scene of the murder two or three times before he shot the abbot. This is why I think he knew who the victim was before he pulled the trigger," Pol Gen Jakthip said.

Assistant national police chief Pol Lt Gen Panya Mamen said Mr Panja had been asked by Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai to kill Phra Bandit and arrived in Udon Thani on Feb 28, one day before the murder.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai assisted Mr Panja in the murder by stalking the victim on Feb 26, 27, and 28 and then taking Mr Panja to the scene of the murder so he could kill the monk, Pol Lt Gen Panya said.

After the killing, Mr Panja was paid an initial sum of 30,000 baht, then four days later Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai travelled to Mr Panja's home in Kalasin and paid him another 20,000 baht, the assistant police chief said.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai allowed Mr Panja to drive one of his two cars back to Kalasin after the monk's murder, Pol Lt Gen Panya said.

"Mr Panja admitted that he shot the monk twice, he acted alone and that Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai was the one who ordered the killing. After he shot the monk, the gunman couldn't sleep and wanted to apologise to his relatives," said Pol Lt Gen Panya.

Police officers took Mr Panja to meet Phra Suk Sujito, a monk at Wat Pa Tor Si Siad and Phra Bandit's father.

The gunman apologised to Phra Suk, saying he regretted what he had done.

Phra Suk said since the gunman appeared genuinely remorseful, he could forgive him.

der Täter hat dadurch auch eine völlig andere Schusshaltung,

das Problem nur, er muss das Gewehr seitlich von der Pickupkabine gehalten haben,
wurde das durch Schmauchspuren bestätigt ?

Klar ist doch,

da hier vorgetragen wird, das es sich um einen Auftragsmord aus Polizeikreisen handelt,
das es notwendig wäre,
dass eine unabhängige Ermittlungsbehörde so einen Fall behandelt.

Die Bilder der Schützen in beiden Varianten,
- Pickup mit eingeschlagender Lenkung, und
- Pickup mit gerader Fahrt hinter dem Mönch,

in beiden Fällen verhält des der "Täter" wie eine Puppe, und bestätigt nur,
was er bestätigen soll,
er greift selber also nicht in das Geschehen ein und sagt, nein, so und so war meine Schussposition,
--- also, --- eine Tatrekonstruktion mit 3 verschiednen Schusskanälen

Man sieht es daher auch im ärgerlichen Gesichtsausdruck der Dirigenten,
der vermutlich ein Baueropfer produziert,
weil nachher, sollte Frau Kuunying Porntip eine Aussage zu dem genauen Schusskanal treffen,
und damit festlegen, von welcher Höhe der Schuss abgegeben sein müsste,
die ganze Tatnachstellung wohl nicht klappen wird,

darum ein ärgerliches Gesicht, und kein stolzes, einen wichtigen Fall gelösst zu haben.

Udon hospital chief held for murder of monk

ALLEGED MASTERMIND AND AIDE ARRESTED AFTER CONFESSIONS BY GUNMAN, DRIVER

THE chairman of a private hospital in Udon Thani was arrested late yesterday over his alleged role as the mastermind behind the murder of a revered Udon Thani monk early this month, a police source said.

Another man was arrested for allegedly identifying the monk for the gunman to shoot.

The two men have been identified as Banjerd Chatphaithoon, the chairman of AEK Udon Hospital, and Bunnag Hongsakham, a driver with an irrigation office.

Both men have been charged with premeditated murder for their alleged roles in the killing of Phra Bundit Supanditto on March 1 at Wat Ban Pa Seesiad, where he was the abbot.

Assistant Royal Thai Police chief Lt-General Panya Mamen earlier hinted at the identities of Banjerd and Bunnag after they were implicated in the crime through the confession of Pol Sr Sgt-Major Charnchai Soisangwan, who was apprehended this week after fleeing to Laos. Panya said Charnchai admitted to receiving Bt300,000 from the mastermind to co-ordinate the shooting, and paying Bt50,000 to the gunman, janitor Panja Chareesaen.

In his statement quoted by a number of senior police investigators, Charnchai said he had tracked the monk on a daily basis for quite some time before he drove Panja to Wat Pa Seesiad.

Police spokesman Lt-General Prawut Thawornsiri said that the mastermind was being closely monitored by undercover police.

Panya said that Panja was feeling very guilty for shooting such a highly-respected monk and had volunteered additional details to police while also showing them evidence he had hidden.

The evidence allegedly included the headwear he wore during the shooting of the monk from the roof of a pickup truck driven by Charnchai.

Panja and Charnchai are in the military custody under martial law.

Charnchai is being questioned by military interrogators and his re-enactment of the alleged crimes will be conducted after he is handed over to police.

Prawut said it was not immediately clear whether the two suspects were linked with any senior policemen. "But all suspects and policemen found linked to the murder will be caught and prosecuted," he added.

Meanwhile, at a police facility in Khon Kaen villagers who were followers of the late monk gave flower bouquets to police investigators as a token of appreciation.

alles sehr verwirrend, soll denn der Mönch auch mit der Frau des Krankenhauseigentümers und eigentlichen Auftraggeber was zutun gehabt haben?

Man eiert hier doch wirklich rum, um die eigentlichen Mordmotive zu verschleiern.

es geht hier, wie ich anfangs schon angenommen habe, um alte Geschichten aus "Krankenhauszeiten".

Warum man aber den Ruf des Mordopfers mit so einer Anschuldigung des Fremgehens in den Schmutz zieht, ist vielen rätselhaft, wenn doch klar ist, das alle lügen, und es um andere Dinge geht.

Love triangle linked to murder
Police suspect monk was shot for having an affair with influential man's girlfriend

Investigators believe a love triangle is at the heart of the murder of a monk in Udon Thani, as the chief suspect on Saturday denied any involvement.

Ake Udon Hospital executive chairman Banjerd Chatpaitoon has been arrested for the murder of Phra Bandit Supanthito, the abbot of Wat Pa Tor Si Siad, but on Saturday denied being the mastermind.

Mr Banjerd also denied being involved in the tawdry sexual affair that police believe provoked it. National police chief Somyot Pumpanmuang said the motive was jealousy over a woman — known only as Dr Kaew — with whom he alleged Mr Banjerd had been in a sexual relationship.

Mr Banjerd along with Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai Sroisangwal, a member of Udon Thani police’s crime suppression and prevention unit, and Boonnag Hongsakham, a driver for Udon Thani’s Regional Irrigation Office, were brought before a press conference at the Royal Thai Police Office (RTPO) yesterday.

All were charged with colluding in the murder of Phra Bandit on Mar 1.

Mr Banjerd was also charged with premeditated murder for hiring a gunman to kill the victim. However, he refused to give a statement to police, saying he would defend himself in court. Police said Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai and Mr Boonnag admitted all wrongdoings.

The court also refused bail for Mr Banjerd. They said releasing him could directly affect witness testimony because he was an influential figure in the province.

Pol Gen Somyot said Pol Maj Gen Boonlue Korbangyang, an ex-Udon Thani police chief who was Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai’s superintendent, was also summoned for questioning on Wednesday.

Pol Maj Gen Boonlue said he knew Mr Banjerd as a powerful local person. Mr Banjerd asked him to help monitor Dr Kaew’s behaviour as he suspected Phra Bandit was having sexual relations with her.

Pol Maj Gen Boonlue then ordered Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai to stalk Dr Kaew and gave his subordinate’s mobile phone number to Mr Banjerd.

Pol Gen Somyot said, however, if any police officers were found to be connected to the murder, legal proceedings will be brought against them. Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai allegedly told police that Mr Banjerd paid him 300,000 baht to shoot Phra Bandit. The first 50,000 baht was paid on Jan 30 at a hotel in Udon Thani and the remaining 250,000 baht was paid before he fled from the province after the murder.

Panja Chareesaen, arrested on Wednesday in Kalasin, was his friend who was allegedly hired as the gunman.

A sum of 50,000 baht was wired to Mr Panja’s bank account for purchasing a shotgun on Jan 31, and another 110,000 baht after the incident.

Mr Boonnag, who police suspect identified the target, was hired for 55,000 baht to inspect the scene and potential escape routes.

Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai said Mr Banjerd accused Phra Bandit of being a bad monk who had sex with many women and embezzled temple donations. Mr Banjerd name-dropped several high-ranking officers in Udon Thani.

However, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Chanchai denied Pol Maj Gen Boonlue’s involvement with the murder as his orders were only to “monitor Dr Kaew’s behaviour”.

in der Vergangenheit hat man oftmals Mönche enttarnt, die eine Liebesbeziehung zu einer Frau unterhielten,
und ihn durch heimliche Fotos, welche später in die Medien kamen, zur Aufgabe seiner Mönchsrobe führten,
eine Tötung wäre völlig unnötig, um den Mann zu vernichten, als erstes nimmt man ihm sein Gesicht.

Während in den sozialen Netzwerken die Spekulation eher in die Richtung geht,
dass weil der Mönch als auch der Auftraggeber der Tötung, beide einen höheren Krankenhaus-Verwaltungshintergrund haben bz. hatten,
dass es etwas mit der illegalen Entnahme von Organen bei Unfallopfern und dem lukrativen Organbeschaffungsgeschäft für reiche Thais zutun haben könne.

Wie dem auch sei, wir werden gespannt abwarten.

Der Mönch soll daher eher Mitwisser und Person gewesen sein, die finanzielle Forderungen für gemeinnützige Spenden forderte,
also eher eine Person, die nicht unbedingt eigennützig handelte, obgleich es moralisch nicht sauber wäre.
