Graves robbed of bodies for 'black magic' rituals

Graves robbed of bodies for 'black magic' rituals

Udon Thani police are hunting thieves stealing corpses from graveyards, probably for use in superstitious rituals local people believe.

The two corpses, a woman who died during pregnancy and a man killed by a gunman, had been stolen a few days before the Songkran festival, said Udon Thani’s Prachak Silpakhom police station chief Nawara Channawan.

The hunt followed a complaint by two women, Anong Hipkaew, 65, and Bualee Chuwiang, 64, of Non Sa village in Prachak Silpakhom district that body snatchers had dug up their children's graves.

The two elderly women had gone to the graveyard in their community on April 12 to clean up the burial sites of their loved ones before the Songkran festival. They were shocked to find the graves desecrated and one corpse missing, along with the head of another corpse, said Pol Col Nawara.

One of the bodies was that of Mrs Bualee's daughter Sirirat Akkharat, 26, who died when five months pregnant and was buried in the graveyard on May 15 last year. Thieves had stolen her head, leaving the rest of her body in the grave.

The second corpse belonged to Mrs Anong's son Nopparat Hipkaew, 32, who was shot dead in another district and his body buried on Nov 5 last year. The coffin containing his body had been stolen.

The district police chief said police handling the case would today question relatives to glean further information.

Police also had information that two more bodies, young siblings aged 8 and 9 years, had also been stolen from another graveyard in nearby Kumphawapi district. The two children had drowned last month.

Pol Col Nawara said the same grave robbers were believed responsible, and police would hunt them down.

Police and local people believed the bodies were being taken for use in superstitious rituals.

Pol Lt Col Chamlong Panchana, chief investigator for Prachak Silpakhom, said on Thursday that local residents told police that several months ago a monk aged 60-65 years, claiming to be from Buri Ram, had persuaded people betting on the lottery into taking him to find the bodies of those who died recently for use in black magic rites. He said they would be rewarded with winning lottery numbers, Khaosod Online reported.

Shortly afterwards a corpse had been stolen and the monk had vanished, local people said.

He believed the bodies of the two siblings drowned in Kumphawapi might have been stolen for superstitious rites. There could be an organised gang stealing bodies, Pol Lt Col Chamlong said.

Offenbar werden Kinder erdbestattet.
Aber ich weiß das nicht, interessiert mich jedoch auch. Allgemein und sicher aus purer Neugierde hinsichtlich des dubiosen Falls hier.

Monk caught in grave arrest

Police have arrested a monk and two other men for allegedly stealing corpses from Udon Thani cemeteries for use in black magic rituals to help believers pick winning lottery numbers.

Udon Thani provincial police said Phra Eun Aphiyo, 65, Woraphong Senaphon, 20, and Khunthong Khetnu, 32, were apprehended on Friday for stealing a total of four bodies from one graveyard in Khumphawapi district and one in Prachak Silpakhom district.

The arrest followed a complaint filed by Anong Hipkaew of Non Sa village in Prachak Silpakhom district that the body of her son and a body buried next to her son had been dug up.

Ms Anong said she and her relatives travelled to the graveyard over Songkran to clean up her son's burial site.

They were shocked to find the graves desecrated and the corpse of her son missing, along with the head of a corpse from the adjacent plot.

Police said officers found and seized an elephant goad, a tool used to handle and train elephants, which had Khmer letters on it and a hammer after they searched Phra Eun’s living quarters in Wat Pha Thamma Chroen temple in Udon Thani’s Khumphawapi district.

Police said Phra Eun denied the allegations of body snatching but admitted he held a ceremony in the graveyard to give hints to locals on lottery numbers.

Mr Woraphong and Mr Khunthong, both residents of Udon Thani, allegedly confessed to digging up the corpses but denied stealing them, police said.

The suspects were charged with robbery, police said.

Phra Eun was disrobed, police said.

A Buddhist monk in Udon Thani province was disrobed in order to face criminal charges, along with two layman accomplices, for allegedly stealing and chopping off the heads of four corpses. Two of the corpses were from Ban None Sa cemetery in Prachak Sinlapakhom district and other two from Ban Chiang Haew cemetery in Kumphawapi district.

Former monk Oon Oonreun, 65, and his alleged accomplices Khunthong Ketnu, 32, and Worapong Senapol, 20, now face charges of stealing at night-time and removing corpses or body parts without a sound reason, said Kumphawapi superintendent Pol Col Santhan Intharajak yesterday.

It was reported that they stole the corpses and chopped off the heads to get winning lottery numbers and make "Pan Neng" talismans, before dumping the skulls in a lake. Police had divers trying to locate the disposed skulls at the lake yesterday.

Grave robber trail ends at temple door
Monk accused of stealing corpses for black magic rituals

Police in Udon Thani are busy investigating a strange case in which no one has been murdered and no valuables have been stolen. In fact, the two victims in this case are already dead.

It is alleged a monk robbed the victims' bodies from the grave to use in occult rituals. The monk and his disciples were arrested and are currently in police custody after officers pressed charges of "colluding to steal assets at night" against them. The monk was disrobed before being arrested.

The grave robbery became public during the Songkran festival when villagers in Ban Non Sa in Prachak Silapakhom district went to their village cemetery to make merit for the dead.

On April 12, Buali Chuwiang and Anong Hipkaew filed complaints with the police that the corpses of their daughter and son respectively, which were buried pending cremation, were missing.

The families of the deceased were shocked by the macabre theft and appealed to officers to quickly find the corpses so they could perform traditional northeastern burial ceremonies, said Pol Lt Col Chamlong Panchana, investigation inspector at Prachak Silapakhom police station.

One of the stolen corpses belongs to Sirirat Akkharat, 26, Ms Buali's daughter. She died while she was five months' pregnant and was buried with her baby at the cemetery in May last year.

Sirirat's corpse was found beheaded. The robber made off with her head, leaving behind her body and the baby. It is believed the head was to be used for a black magic ritual.

The other corpse belongs to Noppharat Hipkaew, 32, Ms Anong's son. The man was shot dead at a shrine in Kumphawapi district and his body was also buried at the cemetery late last year until its disappearance.

Pol Lt Col Chamlong's investigation team began a search for the robber. Villagers reported seeing strangers in their neighbourhood, including a monk who came to the village last month.

The monk immediately drew officers' suspicion because he is well-known for black magic and claiming to predict winning lottery ticket numbers, Pol Lt Col Chamlong said.

He allegedly uses corpses in his rituals, especially of those who died from unnatural causes.

Police searched the area for the suspect and eventually found him. Phra Eun Aphiyo, 65, is originally from Buri Ram. He entered the monkhood on May 12, 2013, at Wat Pha Thamma Charoen in Ban Muang Kao in Udon Thani's Kumphawapi district, according to investigators.

During the police's initial questioning, Phra Eun admitted locals asked him to give them winning lottery numbers while he stayed at Ban Phasuk Buddhist monastery in Kumphawapi district.

But as pressure from investigators mounted, police yesterday said the monk admitted he had colluded with two disciples to steal corpses at Ban Non Sa for use in black magic rituals. He used the corpses to divine lucky lottery numbers.

One of his disciples, Woraphong Senaphon, 20, reportedly confessed to police that he and Khunthong Khetnu, 32, helped Phra Eun dig up four corpses.

Mr Khunthong told police that he and Phra Eun discarded Sirirat's skull at Bua Daeng swamp in Kumphawapi district.

Pol Lt Col Chamlong believes the suspects are also behind the theft of another two corpses from a cemetery in Kumphawapi district in March. The corpses belong to two siblings, aged nine and eight, who died of drowning.

During the search of Phra Eun's sleeping quarters at Wat Pha Thamma Charoen, police seized items including a mahout's hook and a hammer.

Police are still searching for the missing corpses.

19 bags of body parts found in Chiang Mai

Police are expanding the hunt for members of a gang of corpse snatchers following the discovery of 19 bags of human body parts at a crematorium in Chiang Mai.

Pol Maj Gen Pracha Rattanaphan, deputy chief of Provincial Police Region 5, on Thursday led a team of police and rescue workers to search Pratu Haiya crematorium in tambon Haiya in Muang district.

They found 19 black plastic bags containing human body parts hidden in a compartment in the crematory chamber. The bags bore stickers of hospitals in Nan, Phayao and Chiang Mai.

The raid followed the recent arrest of Chalerm Duangpeng, former abbot of Wat Huay Dinjee in Chiang Mai’s Doi Lo district after four stolen corpses were found in his possession. He had used the corpses for black magic rituals.

Mr Chalerm implicated Somboon Neramit, 70, wife of an undertaker at Pratu Haiya crematorium, saying she sold the corpses to him.

Mrs Somboon was not at the crematorium when the police arrived. Police said she had fled shortly before the raid.

Her husband Suthat Neramit, the undertaker, insisted he had never been involved in the corpse thefts. He told police he was not even aware that his wife had stolen corpses or body parts for sale.

Police said that according to a caretaker of Pratu Haiya crematorium, no bodies had arrived there from hospitals for cremation for about two years.

Police said the investigation would be expanded to track down the body snatchers.

There were reports that Mrs Somboon had been caught and was being held for legal action. It could not be confirmed.
