Scores killed, hurt as bomb blast rocks Bangkok tourist attraction
An bomb explosion near Bangkok’s popular Erawan Shrine left at least 15 dead and scores injured Monday.
A bomb fastened to a utility pole in front of the Erawan shrine at the Ratchaprasong intersection detonated around 7.10pm. A second device was found nearby and deactivated and, after 8.15pm, a third device was found near Gaysorn Plaza, opoosite the shrine on a support pillar for the BTS Skytain.
Skytrain service has been suspended and the Skywalk at the Ratchprasong intersection closed.
Several motorcycles were travelling through the junction at the time and the smoking wreckage was scattered across the area afterward.
Police chief Pol Gen Somyot Pumpunmuang and military officers were at the scene. Police already have recovered an electronic circuit suspected to be part of the device about 30 metres from the blast scene.
Photos and videos at the scene showed at least six bodies covered in white sheets with ambulances taking numerous others away with injuries. Reuters reported 30 people were reported injured at 7.40pm
The iron fence surrounding the shrine was bent outward by the force of the blast.
The Hindu Erawan shrine, on a busy corner near top hotels, shopping centres and offices, is a major tourist attraction, especially for visitors from East Asia. Many ordinary Thais also worship there.

Re: Bangkok
Das Gebiet um den Erawan Schrein ist extrem bevölkert. Zum einen die vielen Gläubigen beim Schrein, auch immer viele Kinder, dann die vielen Passanten auf dem Skywalk. Thais wie Touristen. Schrecklich... Hoffentlich findet man heraus wer dies getan hat. Wer tut sowas vor einem Schrein wo Menschen ihren friedlichen Glauben ausüben?
