Here are the reasons why small-scale farmers in the northeast decide to plant rubber, which is
exotic species for the northeast of Thailand.
1) The failure from existing cash crops such as sugar cane and cassava—which requires
annual planting and at the same time always makes farmers face with lose when the
prices go down: In some areas, even long–term fruit trees have been cut to clear the
land for rubber planting. That is because fruit trees couldn’t provide good yields every
year unless farm owners use a lot of chemical fertilizer and pesticide. Farm owners
also have to watch out very closely diseases and pests, which cause so much works
for farmers.
2) The hope to have more and secure income: Although it takes several years to take
care of rubber trees before tapping, the harvesting time last for 20-25 years. This is
main incentives for smallholders to plant rubber.
3) The supports from the government: There have been both the regular supports from
ORRAF ranging from planting to marketing and from other government projects.
4) Land rights needed: When farmers clear natural forest and plant rubbers on that land,
they expect that this would help them gain land rights. The rights over land is the
main problem of smallholders in the northeastern Thailand. Famers have been
fighting and campaigning for long time to get land rights.
