160,000 yaba pills found in illegally parked car

Several packages of methamphetamine pills were seized when police searched a car illegally parked in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district on Thursday morning with the key left on a front wheel.

The black Chevrolet with a Bangkok licence plate had been parked on Pracharat Sai 1 Road in Bang Sue around 5am and was reported to police about 6am, said Pol Lt Kritsaporn Saengsura, a duty officer at Bang Pho police station.

The vehicle was left on the road opposite Wat Sroi Thong, where parking is prohibited during morning rush hours. There was no sign of the driver, police reported, but a car key was found on the right front wheel.

When officers opened the car they found a fertiliser bag on the back seat. It contained small packages containing about 160,000 speed pills in total, Thai media reported.

Witnesses told police they saw the driver park the vehicle about 5am, and then leave. Parking is banned there from 6am.

Police said they would check the car's ownership with the Land Transport Department and examine footage from surveillance cameras near the scene for further clues.

Man arrested with huge quantity of drugs

Anti-narcotics police have arrested a man with 800,000 methamphetamine pills and 20 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, or ice, in his possession, Narcotics Suppression Bureau chief Rewat Klinkesorn said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Pol Lt Gen Rewat said the police also seized from him one car and three mobile phones.

He said Jaras Pitiprakan, 33, was arrested at his home in Lampang province on Wednesday, with the drugs. He had been long been surveilled by a police detective who worked with him posing as a drug courier.

Mr Jaras allegedly confessed he had ordered the drugs from a neighbouring country and that he operated one of the drug networks of ethnic Hmong tribesmen in the North.

Pol Lt Gen Rewat said the methamphetamine pills were to be sent to Central provinces while the crystal meth was destined for the South.

Intricate drug ring busted in North

More than half a million methamphetamine pills and 6 kilogrammes of crystal meth have been seized and another six dealers arrested in a police swoop on a major drug ring based in the North.

The operation followed the earlier arrest of five members of the same gang.

Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya said the success followed an exchange of information between Myanmar and Thailand under the Safe Mekong operation.

Six dealers working for drug kingpin Weera Mueanjada were arrested in the latest raids. Patcharamate Thanaputranond, 35, Watcharin Boon-orn, 27, Pongsakorn Maikaew, 34, Noppadol Pinyamit, 27, Kittikhun Pisitpattana, 36 and Natchapong Pisitpipattana were apprehended in Chiang Mai’s Muang district and in Pathum Thani’s Lam Luk Ka district with a total of 550,000 yaba pills and six kgs of ya ice. Gang boss Weera remains at large.

Narong Rattananukul, secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, said this ring worked through several gangs to distribute the drugs, with a clear division of work between providers, transporters, distributors and those who control the finance.

Five members of this ring were arrested on Sept 24 with 2.3 million yaba pills, 42kgs of crystal meth (ya ice) and 36kgs of heroin in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai.

This ring regularly couriered drugs from the North to sell in Bangkok and vicinity, Mr Narong said. He alleged Mr Kittikhun had sourced and smuggled the drugs from the border to a storage place in Chiang Mai. He packed and then sent the drugs via general transport companies to Greater Bangkok.

Mr Patcharamate's job was, allegedly, to pick up the drugs and deliver them to Mr Watcharin for distribution to retail buyers.

Drug courier in stolen van tracked down by GPS

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT--A 29-year-old man has been arrested after 160,000 speed pills, worth about 50 million baht, were found hidden inside a stolen van stopped in Thung Song district.

Police were alerted to intercept the rental van, stolen from Chiang Mai, after the installed GPS tracking system showed it was travelling on Phetchakasem Road, heading to the South, on Wednesday night.

Officers spotted the van being refueled at a petrol station in tambon Chamai in Thung Song district, Thai media reported on Thursday.

The driver Viroj Changtawa, 29, was apprehended on the spot. A search of the van found many package containing a total of 160,000 speed pills hidden in the roof.

Mr Viroj confessed the van had been rented from Chiang Mai to transport the drugs to Songkhla’s Hat Yai district. He claimed he had been hired for 100,000 baht to make the delivery.

He told police that there were other drug gang members were travelling in a pickup and a car as escorts. The two vehicles had travelled in front of his vehicle and would singal him if they spotted any police checkpoints.

Pol Maj Gen Wanchai Ekpornpit, chief of Nakhon Si Thammarat police, said the investigation would be extended to arrest the others involved in the drug smuggling.

'Ya ice' busts net 3 dealer suspects

Police seized 24 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, or ya ice, worth 70 million baht yesterday and arrested three men in two separate busts in Bangkok and Nakhon Phanom.

In Bangkok, Arlae Sae Woo, 30, from Chiang Rai, was apprehended in Lat Phrao district with 21kg of ya ice, Pol Maj Gen Ronnasil Poosara, deputy chief of Provincial Police Region 1 said.

Police posing as customers contacted Mr Arlae to buy illicit drugs following a tip-off that a northern drug-trafficking gang had supplied him with narcotics to distribute in the capital and surrounding provinces.

When Mr Arlae arrived on a motorcycle at the entrance to Soi Nak Niwas 49 on Thursday afternoon allegedly to deliver the drugs to undercover officers, police arrested him. Two kilogrammes of ya ice were seized.

A search of his room at the Tamnak Thong apartments in nearby Soi Nak Niwas 47 yielded 19 packs of ya ice, each weighing a kilogramme. The seizure was worth about 63 million baht, police said.

Police said Mr Arlae confessed he worked for a Lisor tribal drug trafficker known as Mr Meng. He claimed he had been paid 10,000 baht a month by the drug gang. Police charged Mr Arlae with colluding to have illicit drugs in his possession with intent to sell.

Meanwhile, Assawin Srimuang, 21, and his 17-year-old brother were caught and 3.1kg of ya ice were seized after police searched their house in Tha Uthen district of Nakhon Phanom. The drugs were worth about 10 million baht.

Police said the suspects confessed they distributed drugs for a Lao drug trafficker. The trafficker contacted them by phone to deliver the drugs and paid them 10,000 baht for each delivery, they allegedly said.

The brothers needed the money to celebrate New Year, police said.

'Influential' policeman arrested in Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI -- A police sergeant major described as an "influential person" was among three people arrested with 180,000 methamphetamine pills after a long surveillance operation in northern Thailand.

Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak Theerasawat, chief of the Region 5 Provincial Police, said Pol Senior Sgt Maj Seri Duangchaiprasert, 49, who was attached to the provincial police headquarters, was caught along with Apinpat Jirapacharapiyavach, 28, and Itthipol Chanta, 41.

The three men were major drug dealers, Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak said. They smuggled drugs from neighbouring countries for sale in Chiang Rai and nearby provinces.

The suspects, who had been under surveillance for some time, were arrested on a road in front of the Edison Department Store on Thai Wiwat road in Muang district on Wednesday night while preparing to deliver speed pills to clients in Bangkok.

Arresting police seized 180,000 methamphetamine pills, two cars, two pistols and three mobile phones from them.

Pol Lt Gen Thanitsak said Pol Senior Sgt Maj Seri was an influential person in the province. He had earlier opened two casinos in a neighbouring country, but fell deeply into debt because of the economic slump. He was known to owe as much as 17 million baht. He turned to the drug trade to get quick money to repay his creditors.

The Region 5 Police chief said he had signed an order dismissing Pol Senior Sgt Maj Seri from the police service and set up a committee to investigate his serious breach of discipline. His assets believed to have been acquired through the drug trade would be seized pending further investigation, he added.

Pair arrested on sleeper train, B50m drugs seized

A couple have been arrested and more than 150,000 speed pills and 6kg of crystal methamphetamine with a street value of about 50 million baht seized from them while traveling in a sleeper carriage of an express train heading to the South.

Arthit Thipwasri, 32, a native of Songkhla and his 17-year-old female companion were present at a media conference at the Railway Police Division on Tuesday, along with the drugs.

The pair were travelling on Express Train No37 from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok on Sunday night when they came to the attention of railway police. The train was approaching Thung Song railway station in Nakhon Si Thammarat at the time.

The officers became suspicious of the pair, who were on the 10th sleeper carriage, and asked to search their travelling bag, which was closed with three padlocks, Pol Maj Gen Sommai Kongwisaisuk, deputy commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, said.

The couple were unwilling to let the police search the bag. While the officers were questioning them, someone phoned Mr Arthit and through him offered a 500,000 baht bribe in exchange for their release, said Pol Maj Gen Sommai.

The phone caller had said he would first transfer 200,000 baht into a bank account held by the 17-year-old suspect, and the remaining 300,000 baht after the pair were released.

The police pretended to accept the offer, then took the suspects to their house in tambon Khohong in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district and searched it.

They found one bag containing 710 grammes of crystal methamphetamine, or "ya ice", and one digital scale in their bedroom.

Neighbours told police that the pair sold somtam and roast chicken in Hat Yai before disappearing from their house for more than two months. When they returned home, they had purchased some land and built a new two-storey house, according to Thairath Online.

Railway Police Division commander Jirasant Kaewsaeng-ek said drug gangs used trains for smuggling as it was easier for them to escape. Railway police were aware of this and had tightened their counter measures. Officers were trained to notice the behaviour of those involved in drug smuggling.

The railway police chief said northern and southern railway routes were often used for drug trafficking.

The couple told police that they had been hired by a friend for 100,000 baht to pick up the locked bag at Sam Sen railway station and deliver it to a customer in Songkhla, Pol Maj Gen Jirasant said.

The suspects claimed they did not know what was inside the bag. Police said it contained 78 packaged holding s 156,000 methamphetamine pills and 6kg of crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of 50 million baht. In addition they confiscated a Honda car with a Songkhla licence plate, 50,000 baht cash and 150,000 baht in a bank account used for an attempted bribe, a digital scale, five bank account books and two mobile phones.

Police charged them with having illicit drugs in possession with intent to sell and attempting to bribe the officers before handing them over to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau.

LAMPANG --Three drug smugglers were caught and 400,000 speed pills seized during a search of their pickup truck in Mae Phrik district of this northern province early Friday.

Chaisak Khongthanacharas, 35, Sodsai Sae Lee, 42 -- both from Phetchabun -- and Kewalin Sae Yang of Chiang Rai were apprehended at a checkpoint on Thoen-Mae Phrik Road in Lampang at around 4.30am.

They were among four people travelling in two pickups when police and soldiers stopped the vehicles for a search. Before the search, one person managed to flee.

The search uncovered 400,000 speed pills hidden in four fruit boxes in one of the vehicles. Oranges were placed on top of the drugs, said police during a news conference in Lampang.

The trio told police they were relatives hired to smuggle the drugs from Chiang Rai to Tak, where another vehicle would be used to transport the narcotics to Ayutthaya's Wang Noi district.

They claimed they had been paid 50,000 baht in advance by the drug gang. If the drugs successfully arrived in Wang Noi, they would have received one baht per pill as a bonus from the gangsters.

The other man, who remained at large, was identified as Kraisorn Manitruangkrai, said police. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Traffickers return to trains for drug deliveries

Railway police have been placed on high alert after two successful drug searches highlighted concern that trains have become popular again as vehicles for traffickers to deliver narcotics to the southern region.

Northern and southern trains are to be targeted as the northern region is the starting point of deliveries destined for the South, Jirasunt Kaewsaengaek, the Railway Police Division chief, told the Bangkok Post on Wednesday.

Their worries were reflected in figures which showed that the number of seized methamphetamine pills jumped to 326,000 this month from 79,000 in November last year.

Roads were still the main mode of transport for carriers but traffickers have returned to trains for their operations because drugs can be easily hidden in travel luggage placed anywhere on a carriage and trains also give them an easy way to escape, Pol Maj Gen Jirasunt said.

"They use all channels to transport drugs and trains are one of their choices," he said. "They normally take a ride with drugs from the North and break their journey in Bangkok for a few days before taking another train to the South," he added.

The easy escape for traffickers was illustrated in the latest case on a south-bound train from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok station in Narathiwat.

Jakraphan Kitwooncharoen simply jumped off rapid train No.171 bound for Sungai Kolok as the train was passing Prong Maduea station in Nakhon Pathom on Tuesday after seeing train police checking all bags on the car in which he was sitting.

The man left three companions — Prasert Chuwichai, Malawan Neeranon and Jongjit Rienkham — behind and they were arrested and taken to a news briefing at the railway police head office in Bangkok on Wednesday.

Pol Maj Gen Jirasunt said the three looked suspicious when officers approached them, leading to the decision to search their three bags where 170,000 yaba pills were found.

The three accused Mr Jakraphan of being the key man who had been contracted by a drug dealer in Chiang Rai to deliver the goods to Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Mr Prasert said he was a rubber farmer in Nakhon Si Thammarat who was to be paid 100,000 baht once the delivery was made. He was forced to join the gang after rubber prices plunged.

It was another major drug bust on a train in less than two weeks.

On Jan 17, police found 156,000 pills on express train No.37 from Bangkok to Sungai Kolok and arrested Arthit Thipwasri and a 17-year-old woman. A subsequent search at their house in Hat Yai district in Songkhla also found one bag of crystal methamphetamine weighing 710 grammes.

The worries about traffickers returning to trains began in November last year after railway police seized 79,000 yaba tablets on the same express train.

"We have caught some traffickers with only a small number of drugs since March last year. The catch in November gave us a hint that traffickers are coming back on trains," Pol Maj Gen Jirasunt said.

Every train will have two railway police on board but they can be reinforced at any station on the route if the division suspects there are drugs on the train, the railway police chief added.
